Posted: Sat Nov 14, 1998 at 5:03 PM ET The Canberra Cannons have extended their winning streak to 3 with a 5 point win over the Townsville Crocs at home. It was a scrappy slog out right from the start, the Crocs unable to put points on the board early. Melvin Thomas was on the boards early and along with Pero Vasiljevic they stiffled the Crocs front line in the first quarter and helped the Cannons to a 29-21 quarter time lead. The second quarter saw Canberra extend their lead to 13 before a 10-0 Townsville run turned it all around. But the Crocs were far too inconsistant on the offensive end and they let Canberra break out to another 10 point lead. The scoreline at halftime was 54-45 to the Cannons, Sam Mackinnon lead all scorers with 13, Ray Borner had 9 and Melvin Thomas 8. The Crocs made a promising start to the third quarter with a Ron Rose/Sam Mackinnon alley oop. But the Cannons answered with an equally exciting play, a Pero Vasiljevic tip jam. The Crocs came back fast with 11 straight points from bench guard Brad Davidson. The Cannons continued to score inside through Melvin Thomas and Mike Mckay also heated up from outside. Import kenny Harris in his first NBL game was making an impression with his penetration. The Crocs stayed in touch though and were in with a chance going into the fourth quarter. The Crocs cut the lead to 1 early in the fourth but couldn't get themselves in front. Rob Rose did his best to keep the Crocs close with 2 long bombs. The Crocs favoured the outside shot far too much in the latter stages of the fourth, on one posession, (thanks to 4 offensive boards from Sam Mackinnon) they put up and missed 4 three pointers. yet they still had a chance in the last minute thanks to horrible free throw shooting from Canberra. With 14 seconds left and the Crocs down by 3 Rob Rose had a chance to put the game into Overtime, but his three rimmed out and the Cannons got home 99-94.
