Posted: Sat Nov 7, 1998 at 9:03 AM ET The Newcastle Falcons improved to 4-1 last night with a 101-84 toweling of the Brisbane Bullets at the Convention Centre. The Falcons were in a tottaly different class to the Bullets and it showed on the scoreboard, the lead passing 20 on a number of occasions. The only time the Bullets managed to lead was in the first quarter thanks to 7 quick points from Leroy Loggins. But Ben Melmeth, Willie Simmons and Pat Reidy walked all over Thaddeous Delaney and anyone else who tried to contain them down low. But it was the Falcons outside shooters, Terry Johnson, Rod Johnson and in his return game Tonny Jensen, that really blew the Bullets out of the water. They hit on a very high percentage of outside bombs and with the Bullets showing the worst shot selection in the league they had no trouble pushing the lead into double figures. The Falcons came out in the third quarter and increased their lead, the Bullets still taking an amazing ammount of bad shots, Thaddeous Delaney the worst offender with Ben Knight, Rodger Smith and Paul Scott happy to help out in that department. The Falcons meanwhile rolled along with some high percentage shots and strong defensive rebounding, keeping the Bullets to just 1 bad shot on most trips. Terry Johnson controlled proceedings from the one spot and with him hitting the outside shot, the Falcons always looked good. But most were suprised when the lead passed 20 in the third, but the falcons were happy to hang onto it and take a 16 point lead into the final change. The Bullets hit a few outside shots in the fourth quarter but turnovers from Delaney and a whole lot of bricks kept the Falcons lead safe. Phil Doherty had a great second half with 14 points and he was good on the offensive glass. The closest the Bullets managed to get it was 11 with 3:00 left, but Terry Johnson but a fork in the home side hitting a three from the corner to effectively ice the game.
