Posted: Sat Nov 14, 1998 at 9:34 PM ET The Melbourne Tigers improved to 6-0 tonight with a 107-102 win against the Kings in Sydney. The Tigers big four were at their brilliant best, Andrew Gaze the standout with a game high 41 points. In an entertaining game, The Kings more than held their own in the first quarter, skipping out to an early 6 point lead. Aaron Trahair had an outstanding start with 3-3 from outside for 9 points. But Andrew Gaze came back and got himself into double figures as the Tigers took the lead. Things were very tight in the late stages of the first and got even tighter in the second, both teams happy to trade baskets. The Kings wouldn't have expected to score so easily, but their own defence was not up to scratch, their defensive rebounding also below average with marcus Timmons and Mark Bradtke gobbling up offensive boards. But the Tigers shooting percentage dropped off slightly just before half time and the Kings managed to draw level and go into the half time break even, 62-62. In the third quarter Andrew Gaze started to take over, he passed 30 late in the quarter and the Kings seemes helpless on the defensive end. But Aaron Trahair was getting his at the other end, Gaze unable to risk picking up another foul. The Tigers took the lead into the final change and they didn't let up. Andrew Gaze, Mark Bradtke and in particular Marcus Timmons killed the Kings early and jumped to an a huge 18 point lead, 98-80. The Kings seemed all but gone, but suprisingly the Tigers went away from Gaze and they missed on 5 straight trips down the floor. The Kings took advantage and they cut the lead to 4 with a minute remaining, but Matt Nielson missed a critical trey and Lanard Copeland and Andrew Gaze made their free throws. The Tigers held on for a 107-102 victory. Andrew Gaze was the Game M.V.P with 41 points while Marcus Timmons had 22 including the dunk of the year (in the highlights section below). For the home team, Aaron Trahair and Matt Nielson had 25 each.
